Welcome to the Teacher Education Program!

Mission and Goals

Texas Southmost College offers an Associate of Arts in Teaching degree that consists of lower-division classes that transfer to baccalaureate programs leading to initial Texas teacher certification (Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, 2017).

The Teacher Education program at Texas Southmost College introduces aspiring teachers to the art and science of teaching. Students who complete this program are exposed to the realities of teaching, learning, and the role of education in our global society. TSC’s education courses offer students different opportunities to become active learners through dynamic in-class pedagogical methods, field-based experiences, and experiential/service learning opportunities in partnership with different organizations and schools in the Rio Grande Valley community. Additionally, students have an opportunity to learn about how to use play pedagogy to teach diverse learners.

Program Overview

The Teacher Education program provides students with authentic pedagogical opportunities to begin to develop the necessary knowledge, skills, and dispositions needed to become reflective, professional, and highly qualified teachers who can teach diverse learners in the 21st century.
