Welcome to the Legal Assisting Program!

Texas Southmost College Legal Assisting Program

Mission and Goals

The provisional, stackable Certificate of Proficiency in Legal Assisting* (CERT1.LEGA) prepares a student for employment as a legal assistant, secretary, or support staff in law firms, corporations, and government. The Provisional Stackable Certificate of Proficiency also serves as a building block to an Associate of Applied Science in Paralegal Studies (AAS.PLGS) degree, which fully prepares the graduate to work as a Paralegal. Many students seeking the Provisional Stackable Certificate of Proficiency continue with their education to obtain the Associate of Applied Science in Paralegal Studies degree.

The Certificate of Proficiency in Legal Assisting prepares graduates for legal work in many vital economic areas, including law firms, federal and state governments, and financial, insurance, and nonprofit corporations.

Program Overview

Upon completing the Certificate of Proficiency in Legal Assisting, students will not have the credentials or requisite knowledge necessary for employment as a paralegal, however, the provisional certificate may lead to other employment and serve as a stepping stone to career advancement, higher pay, and future employment opportunities. The program may also serve as a building block to an Associate of Applied Science in Paralegal Studies degree, which prepares a student to work as a paralegal.

Because the law has profound implications in all aspects of our daily lives, students are encouraged to pair a legal education with their passions to allow them the opportunity to create exciting lifetime careers.

*The provisional, stackable Certificate of Proficiency in Legal Assisting (CERT1.LEGA) is NOT American Bar Association (ABA) approved. Students who desire to work as Paralegals should obtain the Associate of Applied Science in Paralegal Studies (AAS.PLGS) degree.
