Statement of Purpose

The Office of Recreation Center and Intramural Sports enhances students’ experience through the development of innovative and quality programs, services, and facilities. The office seeks to enrich the lives of the Scorpion Community by encouraging health and wellness and optimizing student development through leadership opportunities. Comprehensive programs are offered in informal recreation, intramural sports, fitness, and aquatics for students, staff, faculty, and alumni.

Safety Training and Certifications
The Recreation Center provides American Red Cross Safety Training courses tailored for students, faculty, staff, and the broader community. These courses equip participants with essential skills to foster a secure school, work, and home environment.

Current Classes
CPR/AED for Adults – This class instructs participants in CPR/AED, rescue breathing, obstructed airways, and choking care. All skills are taught to adults only. New CPR/AED materials and pocket masks are provided to participants by the instructor.

First Aid – This class instructs participants in Basic First Aid, including severe bleeding, injuries to muscles, bones, and joints, sudden illnesses, environmental emergencies, and burn care. All skills are taught for adult, child, and infant care. New first aid materials will be provided to participants by the instructor.

Refund Policy: Individuals who do not pass prerequisite skills will not be eligible for a refund.

The department offers free webinars for the RGV community.

Late Nite at the REC (Fall) and REC Fest (Spring)
Learn about everything the Recreation Center has to offer! Late Nite at the REC (Fall Semester) and REC Fest (Spring Semester) features food, giveaways, music, games, and activities to encourage students to become acquainted with club sports, intramural sports, group fitness classes, and many other programs at the Recreation Center. Staff will be present to answer all  questions and register students for programs. Please dress comfortably and be ready to participate!


Looking for a job on campus?
Join our team: The Recreation Center is proud to be the largest employer of students on campus! There are a wide variety of jobs available, such as officiating a flag football or soccer game, teaching a group fitness class, lifeguarding at the pool, and working on the fitness floors. In addition, positions are available to assist in keeping the Recreation Center functioning at a high level on a daily basis. The Recreation Center seeks enthusiastic, hard-working student employees who enjoy interacting positively with students, faculty, staff, and alumni. Recreation Center members use the facility to have fun, stay fit, enjoy friendly competition, and relieve stress in a clean, healthy environment. Student employees are essential in helping achieve the department’s mission and vision, as they engage in opportunities to develop new skills and become leaders in a fun work environment.

Using electronic or other means to create a video or photographic record is strictly prohibited at the Recreation Center without explicit permission from Recreation Center professional staff. The storing, sharing and/or distributing of such unauthorized records by any means is also prohibited.

Q: What do I need to enter the Recreation Center?
A: You must be a registered student for the current semester. In addition, you must present a valid TSC, UTRGV, or approved photo ID upon entry. Staff reserves the right to ask for additional photo ID at any time.
Q: Can I bring a guest into the Recreation Center?
A: No guests are allowed.
Q: Do you have lockers available?
A: Weekly use lockers are available for all members at no charge on a first-come, first-served basis. You must provide your lock. Members must remove all items before the building closes on Saturdays.
Q: Are children allowed in the Recreation Center?
A: No minors are allowed in the facility.
