College Prep English & Reading

Students enrolled in College Preparatory reading or writing courses are in good hands. These courses help students discover their potential as a college student, expand their horizons and opportunities, and reach significant milestones in their collegiate careers.

The main objective of this instruction is to offer students a solid foundation in written and oral communication, vocabulary development, and grammar so that they are prepared to handle the rigor of college-level courses. College prep courses develop and enhance students’ basic reading and writing skills, reveal and cultivate their talents, bolster their confidence, and consequently ensure better chances for academic success and life opportunities.

Accelerated 8-Week Programs

Accelerated courses reorganizing instruction into eight-week courses to expedite the completion of developmental education coursework. TSC students can complete two levels of developmental education coursework in one semester. The sequence of Integrated Reading and Writing courses, INRW-0421 and INRW-0422, are the two components of the accelerated programs.

Co-requisite Programs

Co-requisite courses allow developmental education students to enroll in credit-bearing courses while simultaneously completing their developmental education coursework. TSC students will transfer learning strategies and skills to general education (non-developmental) courses.

English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)

ESOL courses are designed for students who need to learn English. The two-tiered program prepares high-intermediate and advanced ESOL students for academic and technical coursework. Each of the two ESOL levels have four courses, including high-intermediate and advanced grammar, writing, conversation, and high-intermediate reading and preparation for college. Every course includes a lab component. Students are placed into the program based on their ESOL placement score.

Placement Procedures

  1. Continuing ESOL students must complete all four ESOL courses at the high-intermediate level (ESOL 0337, 0338, 0339, and 0346) to proceed to the advanced ESOL level.
  2. New students are advised to take the TSI assessment. TSI assessment identifies students as college-ready or not college-ready.
  3. All students identified as not college-ready (developmental education) must meet with an advisor or ESOL instructor.
  4. If the student’s elementary, middle, and high school education was completed in the United States, they continue with developmental education placement.
  5. If the student’s middle and high school education was completed in the United States, they continue with developmental education placement.
  6. If only the student’s middle and/or high school education were completed in the United States, the student is referred to the testing center for appropriate ESOL placement tests.
  7. Please note that if a student scores very low on the TSI assessment but has completed all formal schooling in the United States, the student may have a learning disability.
