BROWNSVILLE — The Texas Southmost College Women’s Soccer is working hard to stay fit for the Fall season. The Scorpions took on Classic Elite, a club team, in a friendly Thursday night at the Scorpion Soccer Field.
TSC lost 3-1, but the main focus is to prepare returning players for next season. The Scorpions had strong moments throughout the match and took a lead in the first half.
Midfielder Camila Gil scored from a free kick that was well outside the box. Forward Camila Minez won the foul to set up the set-piece opportunity.
Classic Elite would respond with two goals. The Scorpions had a chance to tie the match before the half, but they could not convert from close range.
Scorpions head soccer coach Mario Zamora said it was a good scrimmage for his team. He added that they were working players in different positions, players had injuries and fitness was key.
“We need to get ready for the fall,” Zamora said. “We are going to continue to work … overall good performance. We are looking forward to the next game.”
The Scorpions had another chance to level the match in the 55th minute from a set piece. Three Scorpions lost their markers at the back post, but could not reach the cross. It would have been hard for the opposing keeper to cover her post.
Classic Elite added a third from a free kick to make it 3-1.
Scorpions goalkeeper Cameron Mercado racked up a few saves that helped keep TSC in the match throughout the 90 minutes.
TSC Women’s soccer returns to action Sunday, April 6th, against a club from San Antonio. The Scorpions come home to face another club team on Monday.
