BROWNSVILLE, Texas (October 3, 2023) Texas Southmost College (TSC) Women’s team scored an early first-half goal then held Angelina College goalless for most of the first half before ultimately surrendering a goal and eventually losing the match 6-1 Tuesday afternoon at Scorpion Soccer Field.
The Women’s teams took an early lead thanks to a goal by former Lopez midfielder Rebecca Zuniga.
The midfielder’s shot from outside the box following a corner looked like it was going to sail over the goal, but the trajectory made it difficult for Angelina’s keeper to make a save and the Women’s team had a dream start.
“I think we did well,” Zuniga said about the team’s performance after the match. “I just think we still need to improve on team chemistry because it is a brand-new team. I think we also need to improve our attitude, but for the most part I think we are pretty solid, we just need to put all the pieces together.”
The Women’s team won the corner following a shot from forward Mia Ramos. The former IDEA Riverview playmaker forced a terrific save from the keeper.
Defenders Kenia Quiñones and Karime Galvan did well in the first half to help keep the team in the match defensively and provide cover in front of goal keeper Grecia Quiñones despite the size of the Angelina attackers.
Grecia Quiñones saved multiple shots and dealt with crosses and passes against the noticeably taller Angelina forwards. The visiting Roadrunners leveled the match before the half.
“The first half we did good,” Grecia Quiñones said after the match. “We were talking to each other, encouraging each other and attacking.”
The Roadrunners scored three goals early in the second half to go up 4-1 and would tack on two more later in the half.
The Women’s team (2-7) returns to action at 5 p.m. Friday Oct. 13th for a match against Jacksonville College at the Scorpions Soccer Field.
