BROWNSVILLE, Texas – Texas Southmost College Scorpions Men’s team returned to winning ways Friday night.

The Scorpions defeated Jacksonville College 2-1 with goals from Ramiro Castaneda and Emilio Cahuiche. As well as great saves from keeper Raul Lopez to give the Scorpions their first win in October and their first since they beat Jacksonville College by the same scoreline on Sep. 26.

Castaneda opened the scoring only five minutes into the first half. Castaneda was left unmarked as he met the ball with his head just outside the six-yard box.

Lopez was nearly called into action only a minute after going up, but Jacksonville College wasted their opportunity, as well as another a few minutes later.

Lopez did grab a save after a lobbed through ball was played over the TSC defense. The Jacksonville College player opted for a volley attempt, but it was seen well by Lopez at the near post and parried out for a corner.

Jacksonville College kept the pressure on TSC to win another corner and they tested Lopez again, but the crossbar and maybe the fingertips of Lopez kept the score 1-0.

TSC ended the first half the stronger side and could have gone up 2-0 if not for the crossbar.

The post denied Jacksonville College a leveler 8 minutes into the second half. The Scorpions on their next attack would score the eventual match-winner.

Cahuiche found space down the left wing and was able to hold off challenges from the keeper and a defender to pass the ball into an empty net.

The Scorpions had a glorious chance to go up 3-0, but were denied by a nice save and defending on the line to keep it 2-0. TSC had even more chances before eventually giving up a late goal with only 7 minutes left in the match.

The Scorpions return to NJCAA action against Blinn at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Scorpion Field in Brownsville. The Women’s team hit the field before the men at 11 a.m.
