BROWNSVILLE, Texas (August 18, 2023) – The anticipation was palpable as Texas Southmost College’s inaugural NJCAA soccer teams took to the field for their first practice on August 1st. In the midst of scorching summer heat, both the women’s and men’s teams showcased their determination and resilience as they embarked on their journey towards success.
“Today was hard, it really showed me what this team is about,” emphasized Andrea Calvillo. “I know it’s going to be a lot of hard work, but I see a lot of potential in this team. I see we’re meshing very well. With practice, we’re all going to be ready to take on the season with victories,” she added.
The women’s team kicked off the action with a morning practice session, demonstrating their commitment to the sport despite the challenging weather conditions.
“I’m extremely tired, we were all kind of scared when we heard the run was 3 miles but as we finished, we were very proud of ourselves,” shared America Guerra. “I’m very excited to learn how we [Women’s soccer team] play and work together,” she continued.
The men’s team followed suit later in the afternoon, showcasing their unwavering dedication to their craft.
Both teams engaged in an intense regimen that included a rigorous two-lap run around the campus – a testament to their endurance and drive. Coaches and players alike pushed through the demanding practice, setting the tone for what promises to be an exciting and competitive season.
“I was waiting for this day since they hired me for the head coach position,” expressed Scorpion Soccer Coach Mario Zamora. “You can expect a hardworking team giving it all every single play, and I just want to invite everyone to support our teams.”
