TSC Men’s Soccer Earns Hard-Fought Win Over Angelina College
The Texas Southmost College (TSC) men’s soccer team claimed a thrilling 3–2 victory over Angelina College, a program in contention for the NJCAA Division I Top 20 National Rankings, in front of an energetic home crowd at Scorpions Field.
Scorpions Control the Game Early
Although the Roadrunners entered as heavy favorites, the Scorpions quickly set the tone. From kickoff, TSC played with confidence, pressing high and maintaining strong defensive organization. Their sharp passing created multiple scoring opportunities and kept Angelina on its heels.
Before long, their efforts paid off. The Scorpions struck twice with well-executed goals, building a commanding 2–0 lead and full control of the match.
Controversial Calls Shift Momentum
However, momentum began to shift following a pair of contentious referee decisions. Angelina earned a penalty kick and later capitalized on a debatable double-touch foul called on TSC’s goalkeeper just a few feet from goal. Those moments allowed the visitors to pull level at 2–2, testing TSC’s composure.
Despite the setbacks, the Scorpions refused to panic and continued to fight for every ball.
Late Winner Seals the Victory
“We were waiting on this moment to happen,” said Head Coach Mario Zamora. “Like every game, it was a tough opponent, but all the credit goes to our guys. They were focused from start to finish. Even after Angelina tied it, they kept the intensity and came up with the winning goal. I’m very happy and proud. Let’s go Scorpions.”
That decisive goal came from midfielder William Arciniega, who found the back of the net just 10 minutes before the final whistle.
“We came into the game with a clear plan and full trust in Coach Zamora,” Arciniega said. “The day before the match, Coach Villarreal and I practiced that exact same shot under Coach Zamora’s direction. When the same situation opened up in the game, I didn’t hesitate—it felt just like practice, and it went in.”
Playoff Push Continues
With only two matches left in the regular season, the Scorpions remain determined to clinch a Region 14 playoff berth.
“We were fighting for those three points,” Zamora added. “We still have two more games—one home, one away—and we’re going for three points in each.”
This victory not only strengthens Texas Southmost College’s playoff chances but also highlights the Scorpions’ growth as a rising NJCAA soccer contender and a proud representative of the Rio Grande Valley.
