TSC Board passes care initiatives for students

Dear TSC Scorpions,

Last Thursday, the Texas Southmost College Board of Trustees passed a comprehensive care package to support the community during the COVID-19 pandemic. Two of the initiatives provide additional financial relief for students while helping to keep you on track towards graduation.

First, through the Take 6 On Us initiative, TSC will waive 100 percent of tuition and fees for up to six credit hours during the summer sessions for in-district Texas residents—three hours during the first summer session and three hours during the second summer session. If you take more than two classes during a summer session, TSC will waive tuition and fees for the most expensive class. For Texas residents outside of TSC’s taxing district, TSC will waive 50 percent of tuition and fees for up to six semester credit hours during the summer semesters.

In addition to free or discounted credit hours, eligible students will still receive their full financial aid disbursement (e.g., your Pell grant) to help with educational materials or other necessities. You are encouraged to register for summer courses as soon as possible to secure your seat in the courses you need.

Second, the TSC board also approved a Texas Success Initiative (TSI) assessment test fee waiver. The TSI tests helps to determine the appropriate level of college course work for students. Those who take the TSI prior to August 31, 2020 and enroll in TSC during the Summer or Fall 2020 will receive a $10 credit per section of the test they take, with a maximum of one attempt per session.

This local package complements the $400 per student grants recently announced, which qualifying active TSC students will receive from federal funds designated by the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act.

Please help us spread the word to friends and family who might be home for the summer or who have been considering starting their college career. There has never been a better time to become a Scorpion!

Stay safe, healthy, and hopeful,

Dr. Jesus Roberto Rodriguez
