“This was a momentous occasion for the college and our communities,” TSC Interim President Mike Shannon said. “Texas Southmost College has a long and very proud history dating back to 1926. We’ve served our communities, but our communities haven’t always stopped when we hit the border. It’s my belief that our communities should extend beyond the border, and now we have an opportunity through this agreement to begin exploring possibilities to see students and faculty travel back and forth, exchanging ideas and holding dialogues that will benefit our communities culturally and economically.”
The MOU signed by TSC and the SET, that governs public institutions of higher education in the Mexican state of Tamaulipas, lays the framework to explore and develop opportunities for students and faculty on both sides of the border.
“We live in a time of enormous challenge that requires the joint participation and the sum of efforts between society and government,” Secretary Hector Escobar Salazar said. “The process of change and adaptation today are permanent. Younger generations face a new transnational challenge that is common to our nations and communities. What better measure can our institutions of higher education take than true collaboration in education to form our greatest resource, our human resource. At this moment in history, co-existence and interdependence are inseparable from individuals and societies.”
“It will be through this collaboration between our institutions that we will train more and better professionals for the good of our communities,” he added. “We will be recognizing our strengths and our areas of opportunity in order to place ourselves on a more human level of social awareness. This global approach to education and constant synergy will generate greater social impact in our localities, increasing knowledge, skills and in calculating the universal value of students in our institutions.”
