The children sat and listened as Sgt. De León spoke on the importance of car seat safety, proper behavior and safety tips when out trick-or-treating, and knowing police officers are always there to help if there is trouble.
“The presentation was to assist with the child development program here at TSC,” said Sgt. De León. “They’ve been reviewing community partners and community helpers so we were here to go one-on-one with the children. One of the objectives was to make sure they understood we are community helpers, we’re their friends.”
After the presentation, the children received safety-themed coloring books, a police badge sticker, and safety lights to wear on their Halloween costumes. Sgt. De León then escorted the children to the front of the Early Childhood Center so they could get a close-up view of his patrol car.
“We want the children and our Child Care and Development students to relate to positive feelings toward community helpers and get the community to help our students,” said TSC Manager of Child Care and Development Marisela Nava. “The key concepts to building safety tips for our children start off with buckling up and holding onto adults’ hands, but the most important thing is children can relate to these practices provided in Sgt. De León’s presentation.”
