Texas Southmost College helped Brownsville native Diego Morales chart his future.<\/div>\n

After graduating from Pace Early College High School, Morales initially considered enrolling in welding courses. Instead, he followed his family\u2019s advice and joined TSC\u2019s Computer-Aided Drafting program.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
\u00a0<\/div>\n
\u201cSomething sparked an interest, and I started liking it,\u201d Morales said. \u201cMy interest in doing floor plans kicked off when I joined the drafting program here at TSC.\u201d<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
\u00a0<\/div>\n
Morales said he appreciated the program\u2019s small class sizes and supportive instructors.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
\u00a0<\/div>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s basically like your own playground, and the class sizes are so small,\u201d he said. \u201cIf the professor sees you struggling, he\u2019ll go and help you out.\u201d<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
\u00a0<\/div>\n
Initially, Morales planned to earn a Certificate of Proficiency and enter the workforce. He later decided to complete the additional coursework required to earn an associate degree.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
\u00a0<\/div>\n
\u201cIt feels unreal because my original thought was, \u2018I\u2019ll get my certificate and start my own company,\u2019\u201d he said. \u201cSomething in me told me not to do that, to get my associate degree, and I did.\u201d<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
\u00a0<\/div>\n
A first-generation college student, Morales said his father, Edgar Morales, inspired him to pursue higher education.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
\u00a0<\/div>\n
\u201cShout out to my pops,\u201d he said. \u201cHe\u2019s a really hard worker, and I want to work hard just like him so I can retire early.\u201d<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
\u00a0<\/div>\n
The Brownsville native plans to continue his education at TSC, where he will begin coursework in the Construction Management program this fall. His decision to pursue a second associate degree was inspired by his family\u2019s background in the construction industry.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
\u00a0<\/div>\n
\u201cMy family is blue-collar,\u201d Morales said. \u201cI want to learn how to create floor plans both on a computer and by hand.\u201d<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
\u00a0<\/div>\n
Morales said affordability and convenience are among the reasons he chose to remain at TSC.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
\u00a0<\/div>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s really affordable,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019m grateful it\u2019s here in Brownsville. It\u2019s so close \u2014 about a five-minute drive from my house. I also like that they have two locations, the ITEC Center and the main campus.\u201d<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

After completing the Construction Management program, Morales hopes to pursue a career in project management, land surveying or home inspection.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
