Texas Southmost College\u00a0Art Program Coordinator\u00a0David Ransom\u2019s students were hard at work last week putting the final touches on their renditions of famous\u00a0artists\u2019 works.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n
They are preparing for \u2018The Master Copy\u2019 exhibition\u00a0that will be on display at\u00a0the TSC Fine Arts Gallery at ITECC.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n
The exhibit\u2019s\u00a0opening\u00a0night\u00a0event\u00a0is on Wednesday, Nov. 16<\/span>th<\/span><\/span>\u00a0at 6 p.m.\u00a0where the art pieces will be combined with live music, refreshments and the students on hand to talk about their final products\u00a0and the road to completing them.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n
Ransom explained that the project is an academic\u00a0study that\u00a0helps students understand the tools, techniques and practices that artists used when producing famous works that\u00a0stand\u00a0the test of time.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n
\u201cYou certainly want the\u00a0students\u00a0to\u00a0be looking at\u00a0an artist using the same medium. For\u00a0example,\u00a0oil paint on canvas as opposed to a piece using acrylic paint,\u201d Ranson said. \u201cThat way they can better get the likeness and practice because the students are using the same process.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n
Art student Huu\u00a0Triet\u00a0Bui was in the middle\u00a0of\u00a0time\u00a0traveling to the 17<\/span>th<\/span><\/span>\u00a0century to attempt a Dutch Baroque piece.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0

\u201cThe piece I chose was \u2018<\/span>The Milkmaid<\/span>\u2019 by Johannes Vermeer.\u00a0The reason I chose this piece\u2014to be honest, it\u2019s\u00a0my first painting ever\u2014my direction\u00a0in\u00a0art is more\u00a0into\u00a0sculpting.\u00a0So,\u00a0I want to learn more about colors and other disciplines.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n

Bui, like many of his peers in the\u00a0Painting 1\u00a0course,\u00a0seemed to quickly pick up the difficult task of recreating classics.\u00a0The students have been working on their pieces since October 13<\/span>th<\/span><\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n
\u201cThis means a lot to me if I can pull it off because he uses a very limited palette but still created some really vibrant colors.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n
Bui is a perfect example of the students mixing a knack for being artistic or creative combined with the necessary background to better understand the techniques behind making a painting.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n
\u201cOur students inherently have a lot of natural ability,\u201d Ransom said. \u201cThey might not have been exposed to a lot of structure.\u00a0It\u2019s a\u00a0really great\u00a0fit for the students. They start to realize how much more they can do.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n
Like a true art historian,\u00a0Ransom,\u00a0quoted the painter of the\u00a0Sistine Chapel,\u00a0Michaelangelo.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n
Michaelangelo once said \u2018The challenge is not setting the bar too high and not reaching it, the challenge is setting the bar too low and hitting our mark.\u2019\u00a0That\u2019s where the idea of the master copy comes into play. Aiming at something that seems unattainable at first but once you understand the process realizing it is attainable.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n
Amanda Hernandez was another student nearly done with her piece which was a mesmerizing rendition of\u00a0Romanticist William Blake.\u00a0The piece she is working on is called\u00a0<\/span>\u2018The Great Red Dragon and the Woman Clothed with the Sun.’<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n

\u201cThis book is based on the\u00a0B<\/span>ook of\u00a0Revelations<\/span>\u00a0from\u00a0the bible,\u201d\u00a0Amanda Hernandez said. \u201cI\u2019m\u00a0not religious per se but I really want to be able to create something dark but beautiful.\u00a0That is what I want to do with my future art.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n
