{"id":10541,"date":"2026-09-17T16:06:02","date_gmt":"2026-09-17T16:06:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.tsc.edu\/news\/?p=10541"},"modified":"2026-09-17T16:10:47","modified_gmt":"2026-09-17T16:10:47","slug":"changing-careers-changing-lives-tsc-student-receives-prestigious-grant","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tsc.edu\/news\/2026\/09\/changing-careers-changing-lives-tsc-student-receives-prestigious-grant\/","title":{"rendered":"Changing Careers, Changing Lives: TSC Student Receives Prestigious Grant"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[et_pb_section fb_built=&#8221;1&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.5&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_row _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.5&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_column type=&#8221;4_4&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.5&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.5&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<div data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">BROWNSVILLE, Texas &#8212; Texas Southmost College student Eleazar Hernandez is blazing a trail as a standout in the college\u2019s Respiratory Care Science program, earning recognition for his work at both the regional and statewide levels for his academic and research achievements.<\/div>\n<div data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<div data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">Over the summer, Hernandez learned that he had been selected as the recipient of the 2026 Neil Allen Memorial Grant, awarded by the Respiratory Care Foundation of Texas (RCFT).<\/div>\n<div data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<div data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">\u201cWhen I found out that I won, I was really astonished,\u201d Hernandez said. \u201cI was proud of the hard work that I put in, and it&#8217;s nice to see that somebody else is recognizing the hard work that I&#8217;m putting into this field and into my courses.\u201d<\/div>\n<div data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<div data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">Students enrolled in respiratory care programs across Texas with a GPA of 3.0 or higher are eligible to apply for RCFT grants. Hernandez\u2019s application featured a research paper focused on airway diseases. The paper was originally written for one of his courses with Respiratory Care Science Program Director Isidro Ramirez III before refining it to meet the foundation\u2019s submission requirements.<\/div>\n<div data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<div data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">\u201cThat&#8217;s the beauty of learning, especially with respiratory therapy and with everything that&#8217;s evolving nowadays,\u201d said Ramirez. \u201cI think about student success, curriculum building and how to build on those courses that are already there and how to make them interesting. What could these guys do that\u2019s going to benefit them with the work they\u2019re doing?\u201d<\/div>\n<div data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<div data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">Hernandez\u2019s work had already begun attracting attention earlier in the year. <a id=\"OWAcc67edf6-7ca5-e93d-916e-40e511639e34\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsc.edu\/news\/2026\/06\/career-shift-leads-tsc-student-to-success-in-respiratory-care-science-program\/\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tsc.edu\/news\/2026\/06\/career-shift-leads-tsc-student-to-success-in-respiratory-care-science-program\/\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"0\">In April, he was selected to present a poster on airway diseases at the Texas Society for Respiratory Care South Region South Padre Island Symposium<\/a>. His project was among the few selected for presentation from more than 20 submissions.<\/div>\n<div data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<div data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">In early August, Hernandez drove more than 500 miles to Grapevine to attend the RCFT Celebration Dinner, where grant recipients were announced.<\/div>\n<div data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<div data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">\u201cWhenever you got the award letter, they just tell you you&#8217;re an awardee,\u201d Hernandez said. \u201cThey don&#8217;t tell you the amount. They were calling names and my name still wasn\u2019t called.\u201d<\/div>\n<div data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<div data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">Eventually, Hernandez heard his name announced and was presented with a $3,500 check\u2014the largest award given at the ceremony.<\/div>\n<div data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<div data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">As a non-traditional student who switched careers before enrolling at TSC, Hernandez said the grant will help him ease the cost of tuition.<\/div>\n<div data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<div data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">\u201cI am not a financial aid recipient,\u201d he said. \u201cIt covered about 50 percent of my coursework. It was aid that I wasn&#8217;t expecting as I usually pay everything out of pocket. It went a long way in financing my studies.\u201d<\/div>\n<div data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<div data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">While Hernandez appreciates the financial award he received, he said the networking opportunities that arose after being awarded the $3,500 check were the \u201creal prize.\u201d<\/div>\n<div data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<div data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">\u201cMany people that I did not know came up to me, congratulated me and passed me their contact info,\u201d said Hernandez. \u201cDirectors from other hospitals from across the United States gave me their contact info and told me, \u2018Hey, do you need a mentor? Looking for jobs? Trying to move? Like, here you go.\u2019\u201d<\/div>\n<div data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<div data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">Ramirez said Hernandez\u2019s success reflects his dedication as a student and the strength of TSC\u2019s Respiratory Care Science program.<\/div>\n<div data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<div data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">\u201cI think it&#8217;s pretty significant, and it says a lot of this program and about the discipline that we institute into our students here,\u201d Ramirez said. \u201cIt says a lot about Eli taking that extra step and following up on my recommendations to go ahead and actually submit that paperwork to the organization.\u201d<\/div>\n<div data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<div data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">Hernandez is the second student from TSC\u2019s Respiratory Care Science program to receive an RCFT grant.
