The Accounting Technology program at Texas Southmost College has a lot to offer students with its Building Block approach, community service projects and most recently, being named as one of the most affordable accounting colleges in the nation.<\/p>\n

Earning a No. 7 ranking by Discover Accounting in the 101 Most Affordable Accounting Schools, TSC\u2019s accounting technology program is the only community college from Texas that made the list.<\/p>\n

\u201cLearning about this ranking was a real surprise,\u201d said TSC Accounting Technology Program Coordinator and Instructor Maggie Solis. \u201cThis is a great way to showcase that TSC offers an affordable and rewarding accounting technology program.\u201d<\/p>\n

Discover Accounting is a free educational resource that works with over 1,500 high schools and colleges throughout the country and promotes careers in accounting.<\/p>\n

The company determines these rankings based on data collection from the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), College Scoreboard, the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics and PayScale.<\/p>\n

TSC offers Accounting Technology for an average net price of $4,542. In-state tuition is $3,748, while out-of-state tuition is at $4,948.<\/p>\n

TSC\u2019s competitive tuition rates are more affordable than other Texas universities in the rankings, such as the University of Texas at El Paso, University of Houston-Downtown and University of Texas-Permian Basin.<\/p>\n

\u201cNot only do we offer affordability, but we also offer a high-quality, hands-on training approach that is popular among students,\u201d said Solis. \u201cOur students have the opportunity to apply what they learn to real-world situations through opportunities such as our service learning projects. It really is a win-win.\u201d<\/p>\n

The TSC Accounting Technology program teaches knowledge and skills in areas such as general ledger accounting, QuickBooks software and other industry-standard software, payroll, federal income taxes and ethics.<\/p>\n

Through the program\u2019s service learning project, Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA), in partnership with the United Way, students have the opportunity of applying what they learn in the classroom to help the community.<\/p>\n

After passing an Internal Revenue Service (IRS) certification test, the student volunteers can assist with free income tax completions for Brownsville and surrounding area community members.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe learning experience this program offers makes our students marketable and employable immediately after graduating,\u201d said Solis. \u201cTheir skills are so impressive during service opportunities and internships, that many are hired before they graduate. Program graduates can also continue their education.\u201d<\/p>\n

Through the TSC Accounting Technology program\u2019s Building Block approach, graduates have the opportunity to continue their education at South Texas College for a bachelor\u2019s degree in Organizational Leadership or Technology Management.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs an instructor and mentor for our students, my ultimate goal is to see them succeed and continue their education,\u201d said Solis. \u201cAnd with everything this program offers, there is no doubt that they are on the right path toward a successful career.\u201d<\/p>\n
