Welcome to the Texas Southmost College Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT) Program website. The Medical Laboratory Technology Program has been in existence at Texas Southmost College since 1977.
The MLT Program withholds a mission of serving the educational needs of the Lower Rio Grande Valley citizens. This mission will be fulfilled by providing quality instruction, preparing the graduate to be successful on the national certification examination, and preparing the graduate with employable skills as an entry-level medical laboratory technician.
Texas Southmost College and the clinical affiliates’ collaboration provide the basic Medical Laboratory skills training necessary for graduates to be successful in the profession. Laboratory professionals play a crucial role in the detection, diagnosis, and treatment of disease. They are employed in hospitals, clinics, blood bank centers, and doctor’s offices. The MLT program has earned the recognition and respect of the healthcare community, evidenced by its graduates’ 95 % employability rate.
The MLT is a 2-year program and is nationally accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS). Upon satisfactory completion of all requirements, the student is eligible to receive an Associate Degree in Applied Science. In addition, graduates are eligible to take the Medical Laboratory Technician certification examination offered by the Board of Registry of the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) and the American Medical Technologist (AMT).
